Home of the Leaning Tower
It was arrivederci to Florence and ciao to Pisa and the Cinque Terre. First up was Pisa. It was surreal walking through the gates and seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa right in front of me. In addition to the tower, there is the Baptistery, Cathedral and Camposanto (graveyard). We had enough time to break off on our own to tour several of the buildings and grab lunch. Liz and I toured the Camposanto first. During WWII the building was hit and the roof caught fire. Luckily 84 sarcophagi and fading frescoes survived. We popped over to the Cathedral. I’m awestruck with the stunning beauty, sheer size and architecture of Italian cathedrals and duomos. It’s difficult to wrap your head around the fact these structures were built by hand back in the first and second centuries. Liz and I ate lunch at a sidewalk café with the Tower as a backdrop. How perfect. I’m loving the delicious thin crust pizzas of Italy. They are so flavorful. Back on the bus I reviewed my pictures and regretted not having someone take a cheesy/corny picture of me “holding up” the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Guess I’ll have to return one day to get that picture!
